The Howard Government's plan to put US bases in northern Australia and join the 'son of Star Wars' missile shield will jeopardise Australia's national security leading Green John Kaye has warned.

Howard has no claim to be 'strong on national security', since his every move puts Australia and the world into greater peril.
Kicking off a new arms race by supporting an expensive US missile shield will further destabilise international relations.
The missile shield will antagonise other big powers, and will add to the build-up of weapons of mass destruction around the world.
Having US troops stationed permanently in this country will only consolidate Australia's international reputation as a servant at the bidding of US political interests.
This will increase Australia's chances of becoming a terrorist target, and further alienate Australia from our region.
Howard's increasingly ardent embrace of the US is undermining other alliances and institutions.
Only a multilateral, inclusive and co-operative system of international relations has any chance of securing peace and prosperity.
The war against terrorism should be a fight against the causes of terrorism like poverty and underdevelopment, not an excuse for a huge increase in military expenditure.
Australians will not benefit from the Howard Government's security agenda. The only winners are the big arms companies and defence contractors.
