John Gill's Big Three

John Gill was born in New York in 1951. His first musical recollections are of listening to the music of such artists as Hank Williams, Chuck Berry, Carl Perkins, Elvis Presley & the Beatles.
His first contact with jazz came whilst browsing through his father's record collection. Upon discovering jazz he developed a love for the older styles of this genre and other American root music forms.

*

John's next step was to begin playing in Dixieland bands in his native N.Y. In 1977 he moved to the west coast to join the prestigious TURK MURPHY band in San Francisco, with whom he stayed for ten years. From 1987 to 1990 John began working & touring with LEON REDBONE & with WOODY ALLEN's New Orleans Jazz Band. * http://www.popweb.com/woody/bande.htm . During this period he also played with a number of Rock-A-Billy bands. John is a consumate musician equally adept on banjo, guitar, drums and trombone.

*

In 1990 John moved to New Orleans where he soon established himself as one of the stalwarts of the jazz scene as a band leader in his own right & playing with several other bands in the "Crescent City". During this period he was to be seen regularly at the "Can Can Club" and at the "Maison Bourbon".

*

John returned to San Francisco in 1995 to take up a residency at the "Gold Dust Lounge", where he stayed until moving back to New York late in 1998.

*

The decline in the jazz scene in New York made gigs hard to come by, so in January 2000 John accepted an offer from Fritzel's European Jazz Pub's owner, "DUTCH" Seutter, to return to New Orleans as leader of the pub's house bands.

*

Currently John Gill can be heard every Friday & Saturday night {9:30 PM} playing an eclectic mix of Jazz, Ragtime & Blues at FRITZEL's with his "BIG THREE" with Jacques Gauthe & Tom Saunders and on Sunday night {9:30 PM} with his FRITZEL's Jazz Band featuring cornet virtuoso Jamie Wight http://expage.com/page/jamiewight & pianist "Professor" John Royen.
